Staying Healthy, Staying Balanced

One of the things I am most passionate about is healthy eating. Since high school, fitness has been a big part of my life and nutrition came hand in hand with it.

As I began my fitness journey at 17 years old, I learned about diets that would help me achieve my fitness goals. After graduating high school and enrolling at SFU when I was 18, I took two nutrition focused kinesiology courses that deepened my understanding and knowledge of nutrition. I learned how to create a meal plan and track macro and micro nutrients, which drastically changed my lifestyle.

I began weekly meal prepping and tracking all of my macro nutrients. I seldom treated myself as I was incredibly focused on sticking to my diet plan and achieving my goal physique. Over time, I became too restrictive with my diet and took steps towards maintaining a more balanced lifestyle.

Balance to me means eating lots of delicious, wholesome foods that will nourish me. I now enjoy baking all kinds of healthy deserts using quality ingredients like coconut oil, raw cane sugar, and plat based milks. For this reason, I’m always on the lookout for healthy places to eat, as I love going out for a bite with my friends. Recently, a new vegan café called Nulife opened up in my area and I couldn’t be more excited about it. They serve sweet and savory dishes, all made with wholesome, plant-based ingredients.

My favourite dish that they serve is zucchini noodles. They’re super tasty and served with a side salad and a slice of my new favourite raw bread!

Nulife café has an amazing desert selection and I can rarely walk out without a slice of vegan, raspberry lemon cheesecake. Pictured here is the cheesecake served with raspberry sauce and fresh fruit. My friend Veronica ordered a slice of mint-chocolate cheesecake which was just as tasty. I may have stolen a couple of bites.

Until now, I had to go all the way downtown if I wanted to grab a slice of vegan cheesecake or a bowl of zucchini noodles. Having local healthy food options definitely helps me on my journey to a more balanced lifestyle and I can’t wait to go back!
